Of Use

Mothers can easily be of use.

I’m thirsty.

Here’s a glass of water.

I’ve got an owie.

Let me kiss it better.

Where are my shin pads?

Check in the brown bag next to the shoe cupboard.

I don’t have a shirt for soccer.

What about the yellow one from Canada?

I need money for the field trip.

Bring me my purse.

Can you wake me up early?

Let me teach you how to set the alarm.

My days are filled with usefulness.

I am mother, watch me dazzle you with my usefulness.

I am a mother, without her children.

An emperor penguin without an egg to incubate, a teacher without a class, a farmer without a crop.

Yes, there are many other things to do, I just need to remember what they are.

What they were.

On the road to usefulness.

  1. Soon you’ll be together again; it’s an odd feeling tho, isn’t it ?~!

  2. Writing. Being. Sharing. Be useful to yourself? xx

  3. You’re of enormous ‘use’ to me every day…my favourite read in the morning – even though we don’t know each other, a touch of kindred spirit over a cup of tea. Thank you.

  4. These are just things you do. I hope you find comfort in knowing they love you for who you are, not just what you do. (Though they may not realise this till they are older than you are now!)

  5. Hi Kirsty.. You don’t know me, and I feel a bit weird talking to you like this. I’m a big fan of your blog, I read two blogs everyday yours and another Australian, odd really that I should like Australian writers when I’m a Brit living in the Netherlands, anyway I’m moving off the point. What I wanted to say was please write a book, you manage to make me cry (I like crying)most days with your stories of your life, children and husband, but for purely selfish reasons I’d love to read what you would do with characters you don’t know physically. I promise to buy it as soon as it comes out(in hardback).

You’re an amazing mum, but you are also an amazing writer, as soon as you start to feel a little better, remember there are a forest of fans out here waiting to see what Kirsty does next…

  6. It is a lost feeling isn’t it?
You’ll soon be all together again.

  7. Nicely written. Time without our children reminds us not only of how much we love/miss them, but also how life will change down the road when they take off to build their own lives. It goes without saying that you will go back and cherish every moment with them, but in the back of your mind you will also know that you’ve seen a glimpse of the future (still distant for you) which you will have to prepare for.
